University of Iowa police, Iowa City police, and the fire department responded to a fire alarm at the Alpha Delta Phi house early on November 15, 2024 and found 56 pledges blindfolded in the basement with food thrown on them. One person, Joseph Gaya — not a student and not a resident of the house — was arrested and charged with interference with official acts; the charge was later dismissed. The university's Office of Student Accountability found the chapter responsible for hazing and misconduct on organizational property and suspended Alpha Delta Phi on February 25, 2025, with the earliest reinstatement date of July 1, 2029. The national fraternity also suspended the chapter's charter.
